Big Eddy & Fisher Island

The 20-year plan includes major upgrades and new community development in the Big Eddy area, with the goal of providing the same services to Big Eddy residents as to those living closer to IR 21E’s Community Hub.

The plan includes 145 new single detached residential lots, 50 new multi-plex units, and amenities in this area, including a new skateboard park at the existing community centre and sidewalks and trails to connect the entire area. In some locations, trees may be cleared to provide new views to the river, while in other locations, trees may be planted to provide new areas to enclose.

The new plan links the existing developed area of Big Eddy to Highway 10 with a new commercial area along the highway and, behind that, a residential subdivision, with housing organized around central community recreation space, including a pond that would turn into a skating area in winter.

The MacKay Indian Residential School operated on Fisher Island from 1914 to 1933, when the building was destroyed by a fire and was not rebuilt.

The site, which is already used for community cultural and sporting events, will receive major investment to build permanent outdoor soccer and baseball fields, with the goal to bring laughter to this site with such a dark history. A study to identify unmarked graves on the site is currently underway. Once this study is completed, suitable commemoration structures or monuments may be proposed. Other ceremonial or sacred uses, such as sweat lodges, may also be developed on the grounds.
