Elder’s Council Mandate

To advise and support all of Opaskwayak with respect to living according to the seven sacred teachings of love, respect, honesty, wisdom, humility, compassion, courage.

To take part in and support individual conduct reviews as requested.

To advise and support Opaskwayak as requested in practical and meaningful ways to revitalize the language, culture, spiritual and traditional knowledge throughout every aspect of Opaskwayak life.

Responsibility

The Council of Elders is responsible to:

  • ensure the content and intent delivered within the programs and services who have as part of their mandate to revitalize the Cree language and culture are appropriate.
  • advise individuals and groups within Opaskwayak on the practical application of Cree traditions and values on issues and in conduct case management as requested.

Authority

The Council of Elders has the authority to:

  • define Opaskwayak Cree cultural traditions and maintain the integrity of the language and traditional teachings.
  • stop programs and remove materials that are inconsistent with the established teachings.
  • challenge individual and group decisions and behaviours that are inconsistent with established teachings appropriately within the Opaskwayak organization and across the community.

Accountability

The Council of Elders are accountable to:

  • the creator.
  • the current members of the Opaskwayak community and seven generations.

Council of Elders make recommendations to Chief and Council are privy to Chief and Council and are communicated through Chief and Council minutes.

Council of Elders recommendations and communication with individuals and groups with respect to their decision-making and behaviours is protected through confidentiality laws and policies of Opaskwayak.
